Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services  & Illinois Department of Natural Resources

August 2023 - Present

  • Working with The Field Museum to create and teach a curriculum through the Mighty Acorns on the Kankakee NWRCA

  • Assessing local threatened and endangered plant and animal species populations to determine declines/improvements, and to create management plans to improve the necessary habitats.

  • Determine research needed, costs, equipment and to arrange for workers or volunteers to produce the work in habitat restoration.

  • Monitor and assess invasive species to determine control methods needed.

  • Outreach, recruit, train and manage volunteers on workdays to do habitat management in coordination with the Friends group.

  • Grant writing in conjunction with partner agencies for large scale funding.

  • Monitor changes in water tables, quality of water and necessary work to maintain optimal habitats.

  • Mark/Recapture of specific endangered and threatened species for monitoring, assessment of data collection and to draft reports.

Address tenant maintenance needs and coordinate staff or vendors to resolve requests. Respond to tenant concerns and while ensuring compliance with rules and regulations. Oversee the entire districts reservations for rentals and review for compliance. Help the district trainer with field training new hires.

ILLINOIS NATURAL HISTORY SURVEY - UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, ENTOMOLOGY FIELD TECHNICIAN - ASIAN DEFOLIATOR

June 2019 - November 2020

Locating and mapping the most ideal locations for setting insect traps. Checking traps every two weeks and conducting visual surveys for defoliators in the areas. Mapping the North Eastern quarter of the state of Illinois for invasive tree host species and conducting visual inspections for invasive insects. Keeping meticulous notes of the surveys and traps to relay back to INHS and USDA-APHIS. Attend in person and conference call meetings with INHS, USDA-APHIS, forest preserves and other organizations that are involved in invasive species strategies to brainstorm and work on new plans. Working alone without direct supervision and ability to get in and out of areas without aid of direct supervisors to place traps and conduct inspections.
